Helping Hands

This series of wonderful hardcover books provide students with reading skills and practice, as well as teaching them foundational truths of the Christian life. Stories and poems are prefaced by Scripture passages. They illustrate the teaching of the passage. For instance in "Johnny and the Blue marble", little Johnny learns that God speaks to us through His word and through our conscience. His conscience tells him that it was wrong to keep the blue marble he had found in the playground, thus illustrating the passage from Deuteronomy 22:3 "In like manner shalt thou do with...all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found." Words throughout in boldface type are listed as 'study' words in the back of the book & are useful for spelling practice and dictionary work. A comprehension question is at the beginning of each story. Hardcover, Grade 2 (US level) which is approximately Grade 2-3 Australian. Typeface is large print and some nice illustrations throughout. Suitable for reading or read-alouds. 267 pages.

This series of outstanding hardcover readers are full of writing which will inspire, teach and encourage the reader to live out their Christianity in many ways. 72 pieces broken into five sections; "So many things to learn", "Contentment", "Courage", "In all thy ways" & "Responsibility". In the first story for instance, two young boys mistakenly accuse a friend of stealing. Until that point, the friend was ready to listen to the gospel, ready to come to church with them. They tried to apologise but after that "Wayne knew it was too late, Curly was beyond his reach". A very thought provoking story, and that's just the first one! Some words are in boldface type and these are listed and defined (with pronounciation guides) in the glossary at back. This books is for level 6 readers. This is an American grading roughly equivilent to Grade 6-7 in Australia. Hardcover 11-12 years and up but suitable for younger readers if they are capable or as read-alouds. 327 pages including Glossary.
